bookwrit.ing is a free writing app at bookwrit.ing. This page explains what information bookwrit.ing handles, why, and the choices you have. In short: bookwrit.ing does not show ads, does not use analytics or tracking, and does not sell your information.

Using bookwrit.ing without an account

You can write without signing in. Your books, images, notes, and settings are then saved only in your own browser, on your own device. They are not sent to bookwrit.ing’s servers. Clearing your browser data, or using a private window, can delete them, so download backups of anything important.

If you later sign in and then sign out, bookwrit.ing removes the books and settings from that browser, so the next person using the computer cannot see them. Your account keeps everything that was saved to it.

Signing in with Google

If you choose Sign in with Google, Google tells bookwrit.ing your name, email address, profile picture, and a unique account ID. bookwrit.ing uses them to create your account, show your name and picture, let others find you to share a book, and label your comments and cursor. bookwrit.ing never receives your Google password and does not access your Gmail, Drive, Docs, contacts, or any other Google data. bookwrit.ing requests only the basic sign-in permissions (openid, email, and profile).

bookwrit.ing’s use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

What is stored in your account

When you are signed in, bookwrit.ing copies the following to its cloud database so you can use it on other devices and share it:

Named versions and automatic backup snapshots stay on your device; they are not uploaded.

Sharing

When you share a book, the people you choose can see it according to the access you give: Editors can change it, Commenters can read and comment, and Viewers can read. They can see the book’s content, its comments, and the email addresses and names of the book’s other collaborators. While you both have a book open, collaborators can see your name, the color of your cursor, and where your cursor or selection is. Only people you invite, and you, can open a shared book. Remove someone at any time from Share, and they lose access the next time they connect.

Storage in your browser

bookwrit.ing uses your browser’s local storage and IndexedDB to keep your books, preferences, sign-in session, and sync progress. These are essential to the app. bookwrit.ing does not use advertising or analytics cookies.

Keeping and deleting your data

Your cloud data is kept while your account exists. To delete it, open Account → Delete account and cloud data in bookwrit.ing. This permanently removes your account, the books you own (including from people you shared them with), your images, comments, notes, and settings. Books on your device remain until you sign out (which clears the browser) or use Settings → Clear all data. If you cannot sign in, contact support and ask for your data to be deleted.

Security

Connections use HTTPS. The database enforces who can read or change each book, and files in storage are private. No online service is perfectly secure, so keep your own backups of anything you cannot afford to lose.

Children

bookwrit.ing is not directed to children under 13, and you should not create an account if you are under 13. Schools and parents who want younger students to write in bookwrit.ing can use it without signing in.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date above will change. If a change affects how your information is used, bookwrit.ing will tell you in the app.
